It is a poster for Kabuki 歌舞伎 actor named Arashi Hinasuke 嵐雛助. Kabuki was a popular theater play among citizens in Edo period in Japan. The poster is made by printmaking which was also a very popular form of art during edo. Gradient in the background was the common method of printmaking. Kabuki actors wear makeup around their eyes and on their lips, and they make various facial expressions like the one on the poster.


 Utagawa Kunisada 歌川国貞 left more than 10000 pieces of prints in his life. He started making Ukiyo-e 浮世絵 when he was 22 years old and spent all his life on portraying everyday life in Edo. His motifs were varied and included beautiful women (bijin-ga 美人画), samurai, landscapes, and courtesans.
